Also, I totally cheated and started this one before my thesis was finished. Self-control ftw! |

| Oh right, hi |
[Feb. 8th, 2009|09:22 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | working | ] | So I'm not dead, and all that.
But do you know what I've done now? So I'm working away diligently at my thesis, right, which is hard, and takes like all my time, and I was actually starting to enjoy, like, coming home from work and carrying on working till all hours of the night and waking up and starting all over again, because I always did enjoy studying in a weird masochistic sort of way, and THEN, right, WITHOUT MY EVEN DOING ANYTHING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN, I've accidentally taken up a new fandom.
I HATE ME SOMETIMES.
It totally wasn't even my fault, Beth showed me, like, three episodes of Battlestar Galactica and I was hooked. See, I'm like an innocent bystander.
And it's a good show, but I was mainly hooked because I fell in love [see icon]. Like, I haven't felt this way about a character since... I don't know, Will Turner in POTC? (Heh, they're not dissimilar characters, either. Also, whenever ship-parts are mentioned on the show I keep expecting someone to refer to the Pearl.) So anyway, of course I had to turn to fanfic.
And then I couldn't help noticing that it's a weird fandom (there's more gen than slash! I just... don't even know how to deal with a fandom like that!) so I had to spend a lot of time trawling around all the communities I could find, just to see what was out there.
But because there are some small mercies in life, namely the fact that Beth has the DVDs, not me, I am able to nobly resist my urge to make fanvids. See, I have self-control! She just has to never, ever lend them to me.
Then again, apparently when I'm thesis-writing, procrastination takes the form of... well, writing. So my fic journal ( mirandabeth) has actually got a little work-out.
(UNLIKE ME, since I don't have TIME to exercise (but apparently I have time to write angsty ficlets).)
Did I mention I'm directing a musical this year, too? I'm insane. That is all.
Uh, how is everyone?
Also, granny_apple, if you're there? I think there should be a night_spider/BSG crossover. Discuss. |

| | geeky | ] | I want to... be a scientific advisor/writer for TV shows and movies.
Particularly those popular with geeks. I mean, if geeks are watching your movie/show, they CARE about stuff like whether your double helix is backwards (Spiderman) or whether it takes you an hour in your apartment to go from a spinal fluid sample to a DNA sequence on your laptop (Heroes). So, they should hire someone to handle the science for them.
I am geeky enough that this sounds like the best idea EVER. I can't believe they didn't mention it in the Career Development Day I attended today.
(I guess the part where the job clearly doesn't exist stopped them. Whatever.) |

I'm not actually THIS far behind, I watched the episodes last week, just didn't get around to saying anything about them before now. Which was stupid, because now everyone's seen 3x03, and I haven't, so no one can even comment properly. Eh.
( Cut because I believe spoilers last, also, ranting )
Can I just point out again that I have NOT seen 3x03? Don't spoil me! Thanks. |

| [ | mood |
| | apathetic | ] | Beth lent me her Buffy Season 4 DVDs so I could be entertained in my "lying around recovering" time. I like Buffy. I'd never seen it, and we've been working our way VERY VERY SLOWLY through the whole thing (we started a few years ago). I like season 4 so far.
But. Here's my question: Why does Giles live in the Melrose Place apartment complex now?? Was the set going cheap, or something? It's just the exterior, but... it really IS the exterior, I swear.
Knee update: Nothing broken. Probably all the weird joint pain just comes from the bruise itself (and the fact that my knee's so unstable, any movement jars it). I'm a lot better. Still not driving, but hopefully soon. Not sure when I'll get back in to any exercise. (I ran for twenty minutes last Saturday, and today I'm concerned about walking to the other side of campus. This sucks.)
The specialist told me not to do it again. I said he had my full compliance on that one. |

| Melrose Place: Season 2, episodes 4-6 |
[Jul. 10th, 2008|08:33 am] |
I got season 2 of Melrose Place on DVD a while back, and got so excited when I started watching it that I actually wrote most of a recap of the first episode (it has screencaps). But I didn't finish it. Maybe I will later.
ANYWAY, I watched episodes 4-6 last night, which are the last I haven't seen before (I actually started watching at the end of S3, but managed to catch up on seasons 2 and 3 - just not the very beginning of S2) and again, just needed to share. So I recorded some thoughts. No one besides granny_apple may care about this, but on the off chance, here they are.
( Thought 1: why Jake should get lost )
( Thought 2: Sydney, and why the writers may have been right MAYBE )
( Thought 3: I really do love Michael ) |

| [Fanvid] Heroes – "Hand of Sorrow" |
[Jul. 1st, 2008|07:56 pm] |
Finally. (And I really mean finally. I first heard this song sometime around the start of season 2 and was instantly convicted of its perfectness for Heroes, but then I had to wait for the season to finish, and then I got whatever the vidding version of writer's block is, and THEN I stopped working on vids altogether. So. Finally.) Although my enthusiasm is tempered by that moment of disappointment when you've been watching this awesome video on your computer, and then you get it to YouTube and realise how much less awesome it is after YouTube's little gremlins have done their thing.
( Video within. I made a picture for it. Because apparently, that's what the cool kids are doing. )
YouTube gremlins aside, I kinda… really love the way this turned out. |

On the plus side, I'm only a little short-sighted. I think I could probably still pass the driving eyesight test. The glasses are supposed to help keep it from getting worse.
Plus, I get to pick out a whole new accessory! |

How very Freudian.

(Oh, by the way, I had my church weekend away this weekend, had an excellently tiring time, then came back and was plunged straight into my first week of teaching this year PLUS giving a presentation at lab meeting. I'm completely wiped out, but in a good way. Now I'm sitting at home sending endless organisational emails. Why do I take on so much, again?) |

| HAIRCUT |
[Apr. 14th, 2008|03:47 pm] |
I got sick of my hair, so I went and got it cut off. NO NOT THAT MUCH. But still, there was a LOT of hair on the floor when it was done.
It didn't occur to me to take a before shot, but here's a photo from a few months ago (I dunno where all my recent photos are).
( Cut )
And here is the finished product on Saturday:
( Haircut, lol )
Okay, so there doesn't look like there's a great difference between those two. But my hair was all straightened after I got it cut, so that makes a difference too!
Anyway. Hair is different. There's no further point to the entry. Carry on. :D |

| General stuff |
[Feb. 6th, 2008|11:55 am] |
Baby's First Concert was pretty fun. Nightwish were awesome, naturally. I was somewhat perturbed when I showed up about half an hour before the doors opened (to get dinner) and found a street full of queues waiting to get in - and of those queues, I spotted one person wearing an item of clothing that was not black. I felt like some kind of beacon as I walked past in my bright red singlet top and jeans to pick up my tickets.
The arriving-at-a-reasonable-hour crowd included a few other people in coloured clothes, though. But it was still pretty damn easy to find me in the crowd.
***
This time last year, I complained about likely being the oldest person in my new Bible Study group. This year, it seems I'll probably be one of the youngest! There are a lot of married couples as well, which is new for me. I'm looking forward to starting tonight!
***
I officially started writing my thesis yesterday. Awful writing that may not ever even be relevant, of course, but that's hardly the point.
***
I'm almost positive I had more to say. And I'll probably remember just as soon as I make the post. Oh, well. |

I just started a new Word document and saved it as "PhDthesis".
Therefore, I am finally posting my NZ photos. :p
( Beware many pictures )
On an unrelated note, tonight I'm going to my first concert! Yeah, that's right. Not once in my twenty-six years have I been to one of those big shows where bands play and people jump around (I'm getting this right, yeah?). But tonight I'm - somewhat impulsively - going to see Nightwish. It is both exciting and sort of scary. |

| It has to be deliberate, so... |
[Jan. 29th, 2008|10:39 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | Every program on my laptop has decided I don't have a CD/DVD writer any more. I quite clearly do, and all the stuff I've installed myself (iTunes etc) agrees with me, but no, according to every program I actually need, there's no writer. I won't begin to go in to how frustrating and annoying this is, particularly when I have Pirates of Penzance DVDs to make and distribute. Yeah, that show finished over six months ago.
But anyway, I called Sony today to see if they could help me (as I suspected, they've got no idea, but we may eventually accidentally hit the solution) and it turns out that their hold music - on endless loop - is Evanescence's "Call Me When You're Sober".
Coincidence? I think not.
You never call me when you're sober You only want it cause it's over
Yes, Sony. I only called you because I have a problem. I'm sorry. I'll try to call sometime everything's going peachy as well, okay?
Edit: Ooh, we did hit on the solution! I still suspect it was accidental, though. |

| Proud to be Australian |
[Jan. 27th, 2008|10:41 am] |
I went into the city for the Australia Day festivities yesterday, which is something I can't say I've ever done before. Pancakes on the Rocks, the Rocks markets, a drink at a pub and sitting on the grass for five hours or so watching musicians (Evermore, Something for Kate, and Kate Miller-Heidke), followed by a cocktail at Jackson's on George - I'm feeling very Australian.
( Photos )
Caught up with Richard Glover's column in the SMH this morning (the column was from yesterday) and had to share. He's listed 43 ways you know you're Australian. Here's the link to the article, but I think the SMH website is a little difficult to get into without signing up, so I've also copy-and-pasted the text below:
( You know you're Australian if you believe it makes perfect sense for a nation to decorate its highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep. )
Regarding number 27 - Richard Glover has forgotten to take into account that once the name has been shortened, "-y" or "-a" may be added to the end, which can make the name as long as it was to begin with (or even longer, sometimes). "Kazzy" is just as long as "Karen" but clearly filled with three times the love. ;)
Otherwise, it is so true about Wagon Wheels, and it isn't just Kiwis we consider ours - we appropriate Brits like Naomi Watts as well. And there's nothing secret about my pride in our killer wildlife.
And according to Wikipedia, Evermore is a NZ band. The line-up for Australia Day was billed as "all-Australian". Hee. |

So I was just casually counting, and realised that I had seven Heroes music videos currently in progress. And that's not counting the ones I'd really like to make, and just haven't found songs for. And it was about that time that I started wondering if I should be seeking help.
Oh, well. There are only six in progress now, because I finished one. That makes it better.
Ted Sprague - Somewhere I Belong
Because Ted doesn't get anywhere near enough attention in fandom. I'm just doing my bit.
What? I promised holiday photos and actually getting around to updating? I CAN'T HEAR YOU. |
